Christi Perennes Nuntii

This hymn was used for Vespers I & II and Nocturns on the Feasts of St. Mark and St. Luke in the Paris Breviary (1736). Cardinal Newman’s Hymni Ecclesiae has it listed for the same hours as the Common of Evangelists in the Paris Breviary (presumably a later recension).

Christi perennes Nuntii,
Retecta qui cælestibus
Scriptis Dei mysteria
Totum per orbem spargitis.

Olim sub umbris condita
Vates sacri quæ viderant,
Umbris procul cedentibus,
Vidistis hæc pleno die.

Humana quæ tulit Deus,
Divina quæ gessit homo,
Seris legenda posteris,
Dictante scripsistis Deo.

Loco remotos, tempore,
Vos rexit idem Spiritus;
Vestris adhuc in paginis
Nobis loqui non desinit.

Da, Christe, nos tecum mori;
Tecum simul da surgere:
Terrena da contemnere;
Amare da cælestia.

Sit laus Patri; laus Filio,
Qui nos, triumphata nece,
Ad astra* secum dux vocat:
Compar tibi laus, Spiritus. Amen.

Words: Fr. Jean-Baptiste Santeul, 17th C.
Tune: Unknown.
Meter: 88.88

*This word is “astra” in Cardinal Newman’s Hymni Ecclesiae.

Here is the original text as it appears in Fr. de Santeul’s 1689 book Hymni Sacri et Novi:

Christi perennes Nuntii,
Retecta qui cælestibus
Scriptis Dei mysteria
Totum per orbem spargitis.

Olim sub umbris condita
Vates sacri quæ viderant,
Umbris procul cedentibus,
Vidistis hæc pleno die.

Humana quæ tulit Deus,
Divina quæ gessit homo,
Seris legenda posteris,
Dictante scripsistis Deo.

Loco remotos, tempore,
Vos rexit idem Spiritus;
Et quisque, pro ductu Dei,
Scribendo Christum reddidit.

Nos ut doceret, induit
Vocis sonos, Verbum Patris:
Vestris adhuc in paginis
Nobis loqui non desinit.

Uni sit et trino Deo
Suprema laus, summum decus,
De nocte qui nos ad suæ
Lumen vocavit gloriæ.

This hymn has been translated into English as the following:
