Regnis Paternis Debitus

This hymn was used for Lauds on the Feast of Sts. Philip and James the Apostles in the Paris Breviary (1736). At the time, this feast was celebrated on May 1. From 1955 to 1969 it was celebrated on May 11, and currently it is celebrated on May 3 on the general Roman calendar.

Regnis paternis debitus
Cruore quæ pandit suo,
Vos propter hospes exteras
Adhuc colit terras Deus.

Ignota tardis mentibus
Patere dat mysteria,
Per mille præsagas sui
Se detegens imagines.

En immolandus a Patre,
Suum ferens lignum puer:
En Agnus ille, sanguine
Qui tincta servat limina.

Amoris o quæ pignora!
Vobis oves credit suas:
Ligare dat, dat solvere
Quæ solvit et ligat Deus.

Da, Christe, nos tecum mori,
Tecum simul da surgere:
Terrena da contemnere;
Amare da cælestia.

Sit laus Patri, laus Filio,
Qui nos, triumphata nece,
Ad astra secum dux vocat:
Compar tibi laus, Spiritus. Amen.

Words: Fr. Jean-Baptiste de Santeul, 17th C.
Tune: Unknown.
Meter: 88.88

Here is the original text as it appears in Fr. de Santeul’s 1689 book Hymni Sacri et Novi:

Regnis paternis debitus
Cruore quæ pandit suo,
Vos propter hospes exteras
Adhuc colit terras Deus.

Ignota tardis mentibus
Patere dat mysteria,
Per mille præsagas sui
Se detegens imagines.

En immolandus a Patre,
Suum ferens lignum puer:
En Agnus ille, sanguine
Qui tincta servat limina.

Amoris o quæ pignora!
Nobis oves credit suas:
Ligare dat, dat solvere
Quæ solvit et ligat Deus.

Da, Christe, nos tecum mori,
Tecum simul da surgere:
Terrena da contemnere;
Amare da cælestia.

Sit laus Patri, laus Filio,
Qui nos, triumphata nece,
Ad astra secum transtulit:
Compar tibi laus, Spiritus.
