Tellus Tot Annos Quid Tegis

This hymn was used for Vespers I on the (now defunct) Feast of the Invention [Finding] of the Holy Cross (May 3) in the Paris Breviary (1736).

Tellus tot annos quid tegis
Nostræ salutis pignora?
Crux monte toto quæritur,
Ultro tuos pandas sinus.

Quid dura fossoris manus
Scrutaris alta viscera?
Celare Lignum sit pudor,
Quo nostra surgit gloria.

En illa gemma perdita,
Inventa tot laboribus:
En qui latebat, erutus
Thesaurus agro prodiit.

Regina quæsitam crucem
Monstrante Christo repperit:
Oblita fastus regios,
Sceptro repertam prætulit.

Crux sancta, Christi corporis
Virtus salubrem te facit.
Contingit ut te mortuus,
Vitæ priori redditur.

Da, Christe, nos tecum mori;
Tecum simul da surgere:
Terrena da contemnere;
Amare da cælestia.

Sit laus Patri; laus Filio;
Qui nos, triumphata nece,
Ad astra secum dux vocat:
Compar tibi laus, Spiritus. Amen.

Words: Fr. Jean-Baptiste Santeul, 17th C.
Tune: Unknown.
Meter: 88.88

Here is the original text as it appears in Fr. de Santeul’s 1689 book Hymni Sacri et Novi:

Tellus tot annos quid tegis
Nostræ salutis pignora?
Crux monte toto quæritur,
Ultro tuos pandas sinus.

Quid dura fossoris manus
Scrutaris alta viscera?
Celare Lignum sit pudor,
Quo nostra surgit gloria.

En illa gemma perdita,
Inventa tot laboribus:
En qui latebat, erutus
Thesaurus agro prodiit.

Regina quæsitam crucem
Monstrante Christo repperit:
Oblita fastus regios,
Sceptro repertam prætulit.

Crux sancta, Christi corporis
Virtus salubrem te facit.
Contingit ut te mortuus,
Vitæ priori redditur.

Fulgore cuius territa
Pallent tremuntque tartara:
Hæc arma si quis induat,
Ridebit hostis impetus.
