Plagis Magistri Saucia

This hymn was used as the hymn for Nocturns on the Feast of St. Mary Magdalen (July 22) in the Paris Breviary (1736 Edition).

Plagis Magistri saucia,
Dum mœsta largos funderet
Maria fletus, acrior
Revixit in pœnis amor.

Non turba, non vetat crucis
Mortisque dira scandalum,
Inter furentes quærere
Ligno peremptum milites.

Quis tantus ignaram labor
Exercet? Extinctam doles
In morte vitam: quid gemis,
Mors ipsa cum victrix cadit?

En ille quem luges amans,
Præsens resumpto corpore,
Notis amantem te redux
Primam salutat vocibus.

O si beatos tangere,
O si tenere fas pedes!
Sed hic perennis non datur
Gustare vitæ gaudia.

Impleta nunc Apostolam
Promissa te primam choro
Apostolorum grandia
Iubent referre nuntia.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
Eiusque soli Filio,
Sancto simul cum Spiritu,
Nunc, et per omne sæculum. Amen.

Words: Bishop Guillaume de La Brunetière du Plessis-Gesté, 17th C.
