Miraculum Laudabile

This hymn was used for the Feast of The Ordination of St. Ambrose, Bishop, Confessor, Doctor and Patron (Dec. 7) in the Ambrosian Breviary prior to 1700.

This is the text of this hymn as it appears in the Ambrosian Breviary of 1582 (courtesy of the Katholische Kirchengesange compilation):

Miraculum laudabile
Canamus omnes populi,
Quod datum est Ecclesiæ
In fluctuanti sæculo;

Ambrosium vatem magnum,
Prædestinatum a Deo,
Diabolus quo tempore
Fœdaverat templa Dei.

Christus, qui nunquam deserit
Suo redemtos sanguine,
Virum direxit inclitum,
Ut Arium destrueret.

Is infulas dum sæculi
Fert, quæsiit claves poli,
Iusque dum portat gladii,
Suscepit Evangelii.

Mysterium incognitum,
Altissimus quod noverat,
Nondum ablutus lavacro
Episcopus eligitur.

Ingressus est Ecclesiam,
Plebem sedare turbidam:
Cunctorum ora conclamant
Ambrosium Episcopum.

Arii tunc perfidia
Purgatur ex Ecclesia:
Cuncta concrepant agmina,
Nec desunt Christi munera.

Nox tetra cedat lumini,
Confundantur hæretici,
Adest tantum piissimus,
Qui purget mentes perfidas.

Virtus ex alto data est
Ambrosio in baptismate:
Nam statim ut renatus est,
Cœpit fugare dæmones.

Suscepit is Ecclesiam,
Gubernavit intrepidus,
Confessor esse meruit,
Dum Arianis non cedit.

Gloria tibi, Domine;
Gloria Unigenito;
Una cum sancto Spiritu,
In sempiterna sæcula. Amen.
